چکیده
OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS To evaluate the potential for injectable, permanent bone augmentation by assessing the biocompatability and bioactivity of subperiosteal hydroxylapatite (Radiesse) deposition in a rat model. STUDY DESIGN Randomized controlled animal model. METHODS Fourteen adult Sprague Dawley rats were injected in the parietal skull with 0.2 ml of hydroxylapatite (10 animals) or 0.2 ml of a carrier gel control (4 animals), using a subperiosteal injection technique on the right and a subcutaneous injection technique on the left. At 1, 3, and 6 months, three rats (1 negative control, 2 variables) were sacrificed and the calvaria were harvested. At 12 months, the remaining five rats were sacrificed. After each harvest, the specimens were processed and then examined under both light and polarized microscopy for new bone growth at the injection sites. RESULTS The inflammatory response was limited with both hydroxylapatite and carrier injections. Injectables were still present 12 months after the injection. New bone formation was only observed when the injection was located deep to a disrupted periosteum The odds of new bone formation was 48.949 times higher (95% confidence intervals CI [2.637, 3759.961]; P=0.002) with subperiosteal hydroxylapatite injections compared to all other combinations of injection plane and injectable. CONCLUSIONS This preliminary report of subperiosteal hydroxylapatite (Radiesse) injection in a rat model has verified the biocompatibility of injectable hydroxylapatite at the bony interface and suggests the potential for new bone formation. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE N/A.

Valproic Acid-Induced Time Dependent Craniofacial Defects in Wistar Rat Fetuse
Purpose: we previously reported that maternal valproic acid (VA) administration during rat pregnancy produced CNS defect ranely, syringomyelia. Furthermore, it seems that administration of valproic acid during critical period of pregnancy may affect on development of other embryonic skeletal portion such as craniofacial region. The goal of our study was to determine whether there is a relations...

It is with great interest that we read the article by Seo et al, “Percutaneous Osteoplasty for the Treatment of a Painful Osteochondral Lesion of the Talus: A Case Report and Literature Review,” published in the 2012 September/October issue of Pain Physician (1). This is a well-prepared case report which presents a novel surgical procedure using calcium polyacrylatehydroxyapatite cement in perc...
متن کاملCase Report Craniofacial surgery for craniometaphyseal dysplasia
Craniometaphyseal dysplasia (CMD) is a rare congenital bone dysplasia with abnormal bony overgrowth leading to characteristic facial features and cranial nerve compression. We present a 10-year-old child with bony swelling at the nasal root since birth along with decreased hearing in both ears. She had normal developmental milestones and intelligence. On examination, she had bossing of forehead...
متن کاملCraniofacial Fibrous Dysplasia
Fibrous dysplasia (FD) is an osseous growth dis-order, producing immature bone and characte-rized by the replacement of normal bone with fibro-osseous connective tissue. It is a bone dys-plasia that has the potential to cause significant cosmetic and functional disturbances, particularly in the craniofacial skeleton. Cra-niofacial fibrous dysplasia is one of the three types of polyostotic fibro...
متن کاملREFLEX BRADYCARDIA IN CRANIOFACIAL SURGERY: REPORT OF THREE CASES
Three cases who underwent surgery in different areas of the craniofacial region were reported with bradycardia developing intraoperatively during flap traction. Many cases of the oculocardiac reflex during treatment of the orbital region have been reported in the literature. This manuscript recorded that reflex bradycardia can occur during traction or stretching of any structure innervated...
